This Blog is addressing the common question, "Do I get a drug test with a CDL or DOT physical examination"?
The absolute answer is No. A drug screen is not part of the normal CDL physical examination, The test does require a urinalysis. This urinalysis is for health reasons, not drug testing. Examples are specific gravity, glucose, blood, not drugs. It is done to identify health issues that may impair a drivers ability to safety operate over the road.
If a driver signs on with a new company and is added to that companies' consortium, the driver will have to have a drug test. This is not part of the routine CDL/DOT physical examination. So often when a driver contracts with a new company they may require the driver to get a new physical, since they are new to the company and the consortium the driver will need a drug test.
You may ask, why did I address this issue? The question, "Do I have to take a drug test when I get a CDL physical" is one of the highest internets searches. My staff gets this asked daily as well.
